Dear Lauren,
I hope things are going well and that you are moving forward in your teaching journey. I needed to write you a letter to remind you of something important that was taught in your history classes. Never forget the past. It is through the past that we can learn, move forward and be better. As you teach, this is also going to be the case for how you can understand indigenous people and how to approach the subject with your kids. It is also something that should not be forgotten or brushed aside out of shame. It is your duty to share with your kids the history of this country so that we can better understand the culture and needs of all Canadians. You are very likely to have an indigenous student walk through your classroom door so it is imperative that you acknowledge their history and make them feel included in the classroom. If you forget something like reconciliation, then it has no hope of happening or improving.
Remember that the education system failed our indigenous children many years ago and the echoes of that are still felt today. Remember that education is the key to healing the wounds that were created by it in the past. Keep this in mind, and embrace the culture and uniqueness of all the students who come into your classroom. Make it a safe space and one that is for families and communities. Always learn from your students and play to their strengths.
I hope that you remember these words, and if you need a reminder, you pull this letter out and read it. Your changes can be a catalyst for a better future.
Sincerely,
Lauren
